Pictures to be made, Stories to be told

This photo by Dragan Todorovíc is served best with a poem by Shel Silverstein:

The bridge will only take you halfway there, to those mysterious lands you long to see. Through gypsy camps and swirling Arab fair, and moonlit woods where unicorns run free. So come and walk awhile with me and share the twisting trails and wondrous worlds I’ve known. But this bridge will only take you halfway there. The last few steps you have to take alone.

Charlie Riedel/AP Photo: A tall steel cross is refracted in raindrops on a window in Joplin, Missouri, on May 7, 2012. The cross is all that was left standing of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which was destroyed by an EF-5 tornado that tore through a large swath of the city and killed 161 people nearly a year ago.

Non-Sign II is an installation by Seattle based Art collective Lead Pencil Studio located at the Canada-US border near Vancouver. The sculpture is made from small stainless steel rods that are assembled together to create the negative space of a billboard. While most billboards draw attention away from the landscape Non-Sign II frames the landscape, focusing attention back on it.

In various parts of the world, Arnaud Gerniers seeks places devoid of human presence, voids to distant horizons, places of silence … First it is the sea that attracts him, then other types of landscapes. Once the location is determined, he places a rectangular frame covered in phosphorescent paint. This type of paint absorbs sunlight and rejects it overnight. The framework becomes the single light source, giving presence to the absence.

razorshapes:

“Inside the sandworm you are greeted by a natural spectacle of light and shadow. I was amazed. How you can create such beauty with such simple natural materials. The artist believes that architectural control goes against nature and thus also agains architecture. The built human environment is a mediator between human nature and nature itself. To be part of this, man must be weak. To the Finnish artist Marco Casagrande designing is not sufficient. Design should not replace reality. The building must grow out of the location, it must react to its environment, it must be a reflection of life and also be itself, as every other living being.”
